Windsor Estate of a Clay County Preacher
The Windsor place sits on Highway 9 just outside Lineville, a well-kept brick ranch with a curved drive and the kind of mature trees that take decades to grow. Margaret and Rev. Zenus Windsor lived there, and if you spent any time in Clay County you likely knew Zenus — preacher, storyteller, fisherman, a man who apparently kept everything and kept it well. The sale ran June 5th and 6th. I went both days, the second for the half-price run.
The house reflected a life lived close to the church and the community. Lots of sewing patterns — Simplicity, McCall's, Butterick — packed into a storage bin so dense it took a minute to register how many were actually there. The kind of collection one builds over forty or fifty years of making her own clothes and never throwing a pattern away.
The smaller items are what made this haul worth two trips. There are several local and regional cookbooks, including a Crawford-Corinth Volunteer Fire Department edition and an Alabama Federation of Women's Clubs collection — the kind of spiral-bound community fundraiser that rarely makes it out of the county it was printed in. A Southern Union State Junior College alumni cookbook showed up too. On the religious side: a handful of books about gospel music and preaching, a copy of The Old Country Church stereo LP with what looks like a family quartet on the cover, and a mix of devotional titles that clearly came off a minister's shelf. A pair of figural bookends anchor a row of those books in the hero photo. There is also a heavily ornamented silver-plate footed bowl, a leather pocket watch case, a vintage tweed hard-sided briefcase, a jar of marbles, and a box of brass and wood decorative trivets.
