Cart Deal at an Alex City Warehouse Sale

The sale was advertised as an estate liquidation out of a large warehouse off Highway 280 in Alexander City, just by the Home Depot. The outfit running it does a shopping cart deal on their final day — fill a cart, pay a flat hundred dollars — which in the past was worth the drive if the pickings are right.

This time they weren't, at least not for what I look for. It became clear pretty quickly that the people running the sale are eBayers themselves, and they also operate a vendor mall in town. That combination means anything with obvious resale value had already been pulled or priced to reflect it. What's left by cart-deal day is the stuff that didn't fit their model. The warehouse photo tells the story — tables full of glassware, mugs, lamps, and decorator pieces, thoroughly worked over before the doors opened to the public. One of the owners told me when I saw him at another place later in the day that they had one of the best days they have had there, so I guess it is working for them.

Still, I'd driven out there and wasn't going home empty. The cart ended up with a run of Milton Bradley board games — Numbers Up, Scan, and Domination among them — plus a few boxed games including Trivial Pursuit, Boggle, Kings in the Corner, and Boogle. There's a small stack of books, a Barber's promotional hat, some porcelain figurines, a teacup set, and a handful of mugs and small collectibles mixed in among the cardboard boxes.

Nothing here is going to be a highlight reel moment. I doubt I'll lose money on the cart, but I'll be more careful about returning to this particular sale.
