About this piece

Typed and printed Numerical Alabama Varsity Roster for California Game, a single long sheet from a Crimson Tide football newsletter for the season opener against California. Lists numbers 1 through 98 with name, position, class, age, height, weight, experience and hometown — including Richard Todd, Gary Rutledge, Wilbur Jackson, Sylvester Croom, Woodrow Lowe, Mike Washington, Calvin Culliver, Charles Hannah, Mike Raines and Leroy Cook. About 8.7 x 14.2 inches. Used condition: orange staining along the left edge, folds, toning, and pen tick marks beside several numbers.

The back (headed Page Four) finishes the roster, then continues practice commentary picked up mid-sentence: a 41-0 Reds-over-Whites scrimmage, Coach Bryant's comments on getting ready for California, the quarterback race between Rutledge and Todd, six freshmen scheduled for duty (Ted Szubinski given John Hannah's old No. 73), Bryant's retirement remarks to an alumni group in Washington, a note that Coach Bryant is 60 this week, the national TV games vs. LSU and Auburn, and Alabama as about a three-touchdown favorite.

This is a partial leaf from a longer newsletter; earlier pages are not included.
