W. M. Chase Stereoview Japanese Bell U.S. Naval Academy Annapolis Md. 1870s — photo 1 of 2

About this piece

Antique stereoview by W. M. Chase from the "United States Views" series, "American Scenery, Architecture, &c.", showing a large Japanese bell hung in a wooden frame with a pagoda-style roof, set among trees. Albumen prints on a yellow-orange flat mount, about 6.8 x 3.4 inches. Good used condition with a residue stain on the back and a small nick at the top center edge.

The back carries the printed title list "U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md." with about forty numbered views, and "865. Japanese Bell, &c." is underlined in red, marking this card. Other views in the list include Old Ironsides, the Herndon Monument, the Tripoli monument and midshipmen at drill. A pencil number is written at the lower left of the back.

A nice early view for collectors of Naval Academy history, Annapolis and Maryland photography, or 19th-century American stereoviews from the 1870s.
