1889 Cabinet Card Photo Marie in Graduation Dress Atherton Topeka Salina Kansas — photo 1 of 2

Photo 1 of 2

About this piece

Original 1889 cabinet card photograph of a young woman in her graduation dress, from H. M. Atherton Art Photography, whose mount names studios at N. Topeka, Eureka, Osage City and Salina, Kansas. Pencil on the back reads "Marie 1889" and "In graduating dress." The card measures about 4.3 x 6.6 inches. Condition: light overall toning consistent with age; the image is clear and the mount is intact.

She stands full length in a long gown with floral embroidery running down the skirt, ruffled sleeves and a corsage at the waist, holding a rolled diploma. The studio set includes an upholstered chair, a heavy patterned drape, a painted interior backdrop and a draped table with an embroidered cloth and a feather fan.

The front carries the Atherton script signature with the four town names at lower right. The back is a full printed studio design with an easel-and-landscape vignette, "Instantaneous process used exclusively," and "Negatives Preserved, Duplicates can be had at any time."

From the same family collection; other photos from this family are listed separately.
