About this piece

Antique hand-tinted stereoview by J. E. Whitney, Photographer, Saint Paul, from his "Gems of Minnesota Scenery" Minne-ha-ha Series, No. 3 "From the Middle Terrace." The view looks through oak trees to the falling water, with a man in a hat standing beside a tree at left, and the foliage colored in greens and reds. Flat mount, about 6.8 x 3.4 inches. Used condition with toning and foxing to the mount.

The back is printed within an ornate border: "Gems of Minnesota Scenery. Minne-ha-ha Series. From the Middle Terrace," with the verse "Here the Falls of Minne-ha ha, Flash and gleam among the Oak trees, Laugh and leap into the valley," and the imprint "J. E. Whitney, Photographer, Cor. Third & Cedar Streets, Saint Paul, Min." A pencil number is written at the upper right.

The verse is from Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha, which made Minnehaha Falls famous. A nice early Minnesota view for collectors of Minneapolis and Saint Paul history, waterfalls, and hand-colored stereoviews.
