About this piece
Lot of four 1860s-era Paris stereoviews on card mounts, about 6.8 x 3.4 inches each: two Drier albumen views, a French hand-colored tissue view of the Salon de la Paix, and an albumen view identified in period ink as St Vincent de Paul. All show age, with fading throughout and tissue damage on the Salon de la Paix card as noted below.
• Drier, back printed "Drier à New-York, et à Paris, 83, rue des Marais." Twin-towered Gothic cathedral, identified in period ink on the back as Paris / Notre Dame. Faded.
• Drier, same imprint. River view with an iron bridge and a large public building, identified in period ink on the back as Hotel de Ville, Paris. Faded, small stain.
• French hand-colored tissue stereoview, caption Salon de la Paix (Palais des Tuileries), No. 5, DÉPOSÉ blindstamp, salmon mount, green retailer label on the back: M. I. Franklin, Optician, 112 S. Fourth St. Philad'a. Back tissue torn on the left with old tape; crack line through the right image.
• Albumen view of a church with twin towers and a columned portico, identified in period ink on the back as St Vincent de Paul, with a tan M. I. Franklin label. Faded.
The Tuileries Palace burned in 1871, so the Salon de la Paix view shows an interior that no longer exists. The Franklin labels show these were retailed in Philadelphia.
